Data science is a growing area in the tech sector. In 2021 alone, Analytics Insight reports that there will be over 3 million new openings for data science jobs across the world. Data Scientists are also ranked as the No. 8 best job in the U.S., according to U.S. News and World Report.

To obtain a data science job, you must learn programming languages that focus on data organization and management. Structured Query Language (SQL) can be a great language to learn as it allows data scientists to manage and manipulate data using databases.

Though this programming language may seem challenging, SQL is fairly easy to learn. SQL was created so inexperienced coders could learn to use a database program. Once you learn how to use SQL you’ll be able to recognize data patterns and organize data in a much more efficient manner.

Understanding the Importance of Databases

Before you even begin learning SQL, it’s helpful to understand why databases are important. By doing this, you’ll have a full understanding of the programming language.

Databases are used in many fields. They can be used to organize patient information in a hospital, keep track of books in a library, or manage financial records for a company.

If you used programs such as Google Sheets or Excel in the past, you’re already one step ahead. These programs allow you to understand the basic appearance of a database. Furthermore, if you think these programs can make projects much easier,  imagine what SQL can do.

SQL makes data management even easier and can be used to collect significant amounts of data. For example, popular social media platforms, such as Instagram, use SQL to catalog user data to create a more personalized experience.

Implementing a SQL Database System

Coders require a database system to work with databases with the assistance of a user interface. Without it, SQL can’t be used.

There are various SQL database systems, including Microsoft SQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle DB, and more. Each one offers its own unique features, so knowing the difference between them can be beneficial in making sure you’re using the right one.

Microsoft SQL: Microsoft SQL is a free Relational Database Management System (RDBMS). It’s one of the most popular database systems widely used for IT work, transaction processing, and business intelligence.

MySQL: MySQL is another free RDBMS. It’s used for quick processing and is a reliable database system. MySQL is widely used for web development. It can also be a better database system for developers working on the server-side.

PostgreSQL: PostgreSQL is an object-relational database, which means it has additional features other databases, such as MySQL, don’t have access to. However, it isn’t as popular as other database systems, so there are not as many people who use the program.

Oracle Database: Oracle Database is the most widely used database system in the world. Its popularity is due to its versatility, Oracle Database can be used in many industries and has in-memory NoSQL and MySQL databases.

How do I learn SQL?

After downloading a database system, there are several ways that you can learn SQL. Whether you like learning through videos or prefer a step-by-step tutorial, there are many programs available online providing introductions to SQL and explaining the database terminology. Feel free to go through a few at first to find the best structure for your learning style.

These courses should serve as your foundation, allowing you to dive into data science even if you don’t have any prior experience with programming languages. Once you’ve learned the basics, you can begin working on projects or learning more complex concepts.

For those who are looking to pursue a data science career, you may also want to earn a SQL server certification. SQL certifications provide employers third-party verification of your skills at using SQL.

Why is SQL Important to Learn?

SQL was invented in the 1970s at IBM, and there’s a reason it’s still widely used today. It is fairly easy to learn and SQL is the most commonly used database language available.

Data scientists have an incredibly important job in the technology industry and require specific tools and skills. They need to organize and analyze large amounts of data. Knowing how to use a programming language like SQL can make processing and pattern recognition much easier. Learn more about our data science program powered by WOZ U.

You also don’t need to become a data scientist to reap the benefits SQL provides. Whether you’re a finance expert who has a lot of paperwork or someone who works in the medical field and has to record patient and employee information, SQL can make any career much more efficient with a few basic queries.
