5 Resume Tips Every Medical Billing and Coding Online Student Needs

Employers receive numerous resumes from students of medical billing and coding online courses. You need to ensure that yours stands out from the crowd to obtain an interview. Here are a few tips to show that you are qualified for the position straight after graduation.

1. List Your Skills

Tailor your resume around job postings by highlighting that you possess all the necessary skills. Use this opportunity to talk about your accomplishments during your medical billing and coding course as well as at other jobs. Some of the skills and knowledge employers will be looking for include:

  • ICD 9 and ICD 10
  • Medical terminology
  • Medical laws and ethics
  • Electronic health records
  • MS Word
  • 10 Key
  • Charting
  • HIPAA
  • Customer service
  • Anatomy
  • Professionalism
  • Communication
  • CPT
  • Diseases of the body

2. Keep It Simple

When deciding who to offer an interview, employers often give each resume just a quick glance. To ensure your resume stands out, start with the most important information, use headlines and bullet points, and go into detail only when necessary. Remember, your resume is no place to show off your artistic skills: use a succinct design with an easy-to-read font on a white or beige backdrop.

3. Include All the Relevant Information

Your resume should feature:

  • Your name
  • Your contact information
  • An objective — one or two sentences explaining what you want to accomplish
  • Your education — for recent graduates, this is the most important part of the resume
  • Certifications — such as Certified Billing and Coding Specialist, Electronic Health Records Specialist, Certified Medical Administrative Assistant, and Microsoft Office Specialist in Word
  • Your work experience, including externships — if you have never worked as a billing and coding specialist, explain how your previous jobs taught you transferable skills
  • Membership to any professional organizations and associations

 4. Talk About Extracurricular Activities

Show prospective employers that your interests extend beyond billing and coding by talking about your participation at clubs, volunteer work, and community service projects. This will help demonstrate your social skills, leadership qualities, and ability to work in a team.

5. Confirm Your References

Most employers will ask for references separately, but if a company is yet to request this information, you may like to include a note that you are able to provide such contact details. Ask three or four people beforehand if they would be willing to offer you a reference, choosing professionals you know through work or school rather than friends or family members.   Finding a job after you graduate can be challenging without your school’s help. When choosing a medical billing and coding online program, pick a college that will provide you with job support after graduation, such as networking, interview training, and resume writing advice, to increase your chances of procuring a well-paid position.

“When my youngest child graduated from high school, I told my husband that it was my time. I went back to school to change careers after spending 37 years in the business field. At SCI, the instructors are professional, and they care about what they are teaching you, as well as expect you to give 100% in return. I had problems understanding how to draw in syringes and give injections. I requested extra help from a knowledgeable instructor, and I was able to receive one-on-one training. Today, I draw injections for approximately 100 patients each week. I am very confident in what I’ve learned. SCI has given me the chance to do what I always wanted to do. Thank you for my education.
