Here are the different ways to become an automotive service technician in Texas:
1. Enroll for an ASE-Accredited Program in High School
If you’re young and dreaming of working with cars and trucks, you may enroll in an ASE-accredited automotive program in high school. The program provides a foundational set of skills and knowledge to make it easier to complete a college program successfully.
In some cases, you may start working immediately if you complete the high school program, since it may provide everything you need for the job. You may still want to pursue the job training further in college to keep abreast of the ever-advancing auto-making technology.
2. Attend College Programs
Not everyone knows which career they want to pursue while still in high school. Luckily, Texas has its fair share of post-secondary automotive programs requiring a year or less to complete. These programs admit new high school graduates, and any older student wishing to make a career change. You can earn a certificate, diploma, or an associate\’s degree if you choose to study for two years.
College programs also provide the option to choose a specialty when earning a certificate or degree. You could choose to study diesel and truck mechanics or select a manufacturer-specific program if aspiring to work in a dealership. You will find these programs in the community or technical colleges, or at the manufacturers\’ training centers.
3. On-The-Job Training
You could also find a mechanic to hire you as an apprentice as an alternative to going to school. This isn\’t a common approach, because classes provide the fundamental knowledge needed to learn how to become an automotive service technician in Texas, or anywhere else. As a trainee, you may earn while you train and learn in a mechanic\’s shop.
Apprenticeship isn\’t as common in automotive mechanics as it is in other fields. You may not find a mechanic willing to spare time to help you learn the ropes and you may still have to go to school for the skills and certificate from the ASE.
