It’s Father\’s Day, the day when we take a moment to honor the men in our lives who have worked and sacrificed to give us a chance at a better life. You may feel pressure to figure out what to do on Father\’s Day, especially in this current climate of increased social distancing. With a little creativity, you\’ll be able to give your Dad his best one yet.
Let\’s take a closer look at the Father\’s Day holiday, what you can do for the holiday, and how to best celebrate with your Dad.
What to Do for Father\’s Day
You may find yourself wondering how to celebrate Father\’s Day. It\’s not an easy question to answer and will vary depending on your Dad. It can seem nerve-wracking, as you put a lot of pressure on yourself to come up with a great idea for spending the holiday. After all, our Dads are important to us — we should want to show them the best time possible on this day honoring them.
There\’s a secret you may not know about what fathers really want for Father\’s Day, however. That secret is this: they just want to spend time with their kids. The \”what\” isn\’t as important as the \”why\” in this case. By taking the time to do anything with your Dad, you\’re showing him how important he is to you. You\’re setting aside time in your busy schedule just to show you care.

When Did It Start?
Every year we all observe Father\’s Day, but when did it start? What are the origins behind the holiday itself? Here\’s a little info on the history about Father\’s Day.
According to History.com, the first Father\’s Day came on June 19, 1910. It was celebrated in the state of Washington. The rest of the country would have to wait until 1972 to celebrate. That\’s when Father\’s Day became a national holiday — 58 years after President Woodrow Wilson had declared Mother\’s Day a national holiday. This year, Father\’s Day happens on Sunday, June 21, 2020. Father\’s Day may not have taken off as quickly as Mother\’s Day did, but we honor it today. It\’s estimated we spend over $1 billion on gifts, and rightfully so.
So why is Father\’s Day so important? What is the true meaning of setting aside one day in the middle of June to honor Dad?
Importance of Celebrating
Father\’s Day is important for a number of reasons, chief among them is that fathers are integral to our society. These men have sacrificed much for their families. Whether it was working long hours to put food on the table or putting their own interests aside for the sake of their families, we owe fathers a tremendous debt.
Another reason is that so many of the people we know are fathers. Think about the men in your life. Apart from just our father, we also have uncles, grandfathers, and friends who are also fathers. These men deserve honor as well. Every Father\’s Day is an opportunity to recognize not just our own fathers, but the other fathers in our lives.
Every Father\’s Day, people buy their fathers\’ gifts. They may gather for a cookout. These are all fine gestures and are interwoven with the fabric of this great holiday. But this time it\’s important, most of all, to say, \”Thank you.\” Show appreciation for what your father went through. The reason for the holiday is expressing gratitude. You can do that with big or small gestures. The only thing that matters is that it comes from the heart!
