PELL GRANTS

The Federal Pell Grant is granted to undergraduate students who have not completed a bachelor’s degree, are enrolled or have been accepted for enrollment as regular students in an eligible degree or certificate program, have obtained a high school diploma or GED, and are either U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens. The grant amount is determined based on various factors, with financial need being a key consideration.

The Direct Subsidized Loan is a loan based on financial need. No interest accrues before or during authorized deferment periods, and eligibility depends on a student’s financial need, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®), while adhering to annual and lifetime aggregate loan limits. The qualification process is part of the standard FAFSA® application.

During deferment, the federal government covers the interest on the loan until repayment begins. Repayment is automatically deferred as long as the borrower is enrolled at least half-time. Once enrollment drops below half-time status, a six-month grace period precedes repayment. This grace period applies to all federal student loans. For additional information about the Federal Direct Subsidized Loan, please visit https://studentaid.gov/.

The Direct Unsubsidized Loan isn’t based on financial need; instead, it’s available to students who don’t qualify for Subsidized funds but still require additional financial support. Interest begins accruing from the moment the loan is disbursed and continues throughout the loan’s lifetime. To be eligible, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) and stay within their annual and lifetime aggregate loan limits.

During in-school and deferment periods, students are responsible for covering the accruing interest. Repayment is automatically deferred until the borrower is no longer enrolled at least half-time. Any unpaid interest at the start of repayment gets added to the principal loan balance, making it advisable for borrowers to address accrued interest when possible. After dropping below half-time enrollment, a standard six-month grace period precedes loan repayment. This grace period applies to all federal student loans. For more information about the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan, please visit  https://studentaid.gov/.

Direct PLUS Loans are intended for parents of dependent undergraduate students to help cover educational expenses up to the Cost of Attendance after subtracting all other financial aid. The parent receiving the loan is responsible for all accruing interest starting from the disbursement of the loan.

To be eligible, the applicant must be the student’s biological or adoptive parent or their stepparent. These loans are not tied to financial need and are granted following a credit check performed during the application procedure. The Financial Aid Office will determine the amount the student is eligible to receive, considering the student’s Cost of Attendance.

For more details about the Federal Direct PLUS Loan, please visit  https://studentaid.gov/.

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is a program available at around 3,800 participating post-secondary institutions, including SCI, which is honored to be one of them. This initiative aims to provide grants based on financial need to support low-income undergraduate students in their pursuit of higher education.

To apply for the FSEOG, students are required to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) as part of the application process. SCI gives priority to students who meet the criteria of “exceptional need” as defined by the U.S. Department of Education, as well as those who are recipients of the Federal Pell Grant.

Federal Work Study at SCI provides students with an opportunity to earn income and gain job skills while studying. Funded by the Department of Education, these awards are limited and given on a first-come, first-serve basis. Eligibility is determined through the FAFSA® application, requiring students to be enrolled at least half-time and demonstrate financial need.

Southern Careers Institute understands that Veterans have spent years serving their country. We are ready to serve Veterans and their families by committing to provide information and services to those who qualify for education benefits as they work to achieve their academic goals.

SCI is classified as non-term, meaning our programs are measured in quarter credit hours. Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) is paid based on the beginning date, ending date, and number of quarter credit hours in each 3-week period of enrollment. VA converts these quarter credit hours into equivalent credit hours.

Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) is paid directly to students based on the campus facility code and school enrollment status.

For Chapter 33 only, the MHA is prorated by the student’s length of service and Rate of Pursuit (RoP). The VA will calculate RoP by multiplying the number of credit hours being pursued by 12, then dividing the number of weeks in the course. The resulting percentage is the student’s Rate of Pursuit. If RoP is more than 50% the Chapter 33 student is eligible to receive a Monthly Housing Allowance.

Active-duty personnel receiving Chapter 33 benefits or spouses of active-duty personnel receiving Transfer of Entitlement benefits are not eligible for the Monthly Housing Allowance.

For Chapters 30, 35, and 1606, Monthly Housing Allowance is determined by training time and days based on VA Quarter Credit Equivalency Tables

If taking less than 3 quarter credit hours in a 3-week period, MHA will not be paid at a full-time rate and will be adjusted accordingly by the VA.

Any VA student with questions related to their education benefits, please call 888-GIBILL-1 (888-442-4551) between 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday-Friday.
