Having a career in medical billing and coding gives you job security and flexibility. Healthcare is a necessity for maintaining quality of life, and providers are everywhere. Some positions may even allow you to work remotely. As a medical biller and coder, you are the hub between patients, insurance companies, and healthcare providers, ensuring that the billing reimbursement process runs smoothly for everyone.

There is room for career growth in medical billing and coding. The starting salary for medical records and health information technicians in Texas is $27,2161 and the profession is expected to grow by 10% in the next ten years.2 While completing a medical billing and coding program gives you the foundational knowledge required to do this job, getting national certifications in medical billing and coding will make your job applications stronger.

What Certifications Do I Need to Become a Medical Biller & Coder?

In addition to completing a training program, an employer may want you to get additional certification of your skills. If you’re looking for work in Texas, these four medical billing and coding certifications will make you more marketable to potential employers. Except for the Microsoft Word certificate, you must have a high school diploma or GED to be eligible for these national certification exams. You must also have completed a medical billing and coding training program within the last five years or have one year of supervised work experience in the medical billing and coding field within the last three years. After getting your certification, you will have to renew it every two years.

Certified Billing & Coding Specialist

A Billing & Coding Specialist certification shows that you have a comprehensive understanding of medical procedure codes and billing procedures. When a patient meets with a physician, they may take very general notes, and it is your responsibility to translate those notes to medical codes so the patient is billed properly and both the physician and the patient are reimbursed appropriately by the insurance company. You may also be responsible for securely releasing patient records and auditing billing records for fraud. This certification shows that you are capable of getting the right information to process a claim quickly and correctly.

Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist

There is some overlap between Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist and Certified Billing & Coding Specialist certifications. A Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist may perform basic coding, but the primary responsibility is the maintenance of patient records. You may also coordinate the release of patient medical records to facilitate care from another provider or coverage from the insurance company. This certification shows potential employers that you are capable of auditing patient records to ensure they have been accurately completed and are compliant with industry policies.

Certified Medical Administrative Assistant

Certified Medical Administrative Assistants are responsible for keeping the office running smoothly. While providers are meeting with patients, you may be responding to patient questions and scheduling appointments. You could also be responsible for updating patient records. This certification shows employers that you have good organizational skills and an eye for detail.

Microsoft Office Specialist: Word

Clear communication is the foundation of your job as a medical biller or coder. You ensure that the patient, physician, and insurance company are all on the same page. This certification shows that you know how to use the major features of Microsoft Word efficiently in a professional setting.

As a medical biller and coder, you’ll become a bridge between patients, insurance companies, and healthcare providers, creating and maintaining medical records and leveraging health information technologies. You’ll process health insurance claims, code patient procedures, file forms with insurance companies and governmental entities such as Medicare, and track billing records.

Vocational technical education is vital to the allied health field. Employer-tailored programs at Southern Careers Institute train on the Day-1 ReadyTM skills and industry-preferred certifications required for the medical billing and coding jobs available in your community.
