Interns are typically supposed to gain marketable experience during the program. Sometimes, a full-time job opportunity is optional after the training.
So Then…What is an Externship?
The term “externship” is an amalgamation of the words “experience” and “internship.” It means to experience an internship. An externship is a short, unpaid, and informal internship that runs for a short time, typically one day to a few weeks. It is supposed to give the learner a bit of exposure to the marketplace. At the same time, it allows the company to meet a wide pool of potential new employees over a short time with minimal costs.
What is an Apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a training program that allows you to acquire hands-on technical training while earning money. It is best described as work-based training. Apprenticeships can run for a minimum of one year with an assured job offer after the program. An apprentice typically shadows an expert and gains skills on the job.
Apprenticeship programs require a structured training plan and are supposed to focus on acquiring specific skills the employer needs. They require one-on-one mentorship and lead to industry-recognized credentials. Additionally, they are meant for highly skill-based technical careers such as engineering fields. They are for trainees who are certain about their career paths. Usually, a job is offered at the end of the training.

Both programs offer hands-on job experience and sometimes, they both pay. Both apprenticeships and internships are important tools for building a trained pipeline of skilled labor needed to meet the needs of the workforce in a variety of industries, including the trades, beauty, and technology.
When considering an apprenticeship vs internship, it’s important to consider the time they require. Apprenticeships typically last longer than internships and a job is always assured for the apprentice. An internship is sometimes a requirement before being employed.
