Accounting Schools in Austin: Texas Grads Need These Interview Skills

You have just graduated from your accounting specialist course, you have sent out some resumes, and now it is time for your for your first interview. This can be a daunting experience, particularly if you have never held a professional position before; but with proper preparation, you can show prospective employers why you would be the perfect fit for the job.

1. Prepare for the Interview

Before the day of your interview even arrives, you should start preparing. Find out all you can about the company, the person interviewing you, and the position for which you are applying. Use this information to think about how you can best demonstrate the skills you learned during your accounting program as well as experience from other aspects of your life, including high school, work experience, and extracurricular activities.

2. Pay Attention to Presentation

If you are able to find out the company dress code, use this as a guideline for what to wear to your interview. If the information is not readily available, you can either observe what employees are wearing or use your best judgement to deem what is appropriate attire for an accounting specialist.

3. Be Yourself

Employers want to see that candidates have personalities beyond their accounting skills. Be ready to give detailed answers to open-ended questions like: “What are your aspirations for the future?” and “What are your strengths and weaknesses?” Try to use your answers to show why the job would be a great next step for you and how you would be a valuable asset to the company. This part of the interview is your chance to sell yourself without looking arrogant.

4. Be Ready to Provide Examples

Employers understand that, as you have only just graduated, you have had little chance to demonstrate your accounting skills in real-life situations. However, they will still want to know if you are able to work with others and carry out tasks without the need for constant supervision or guidance. Think of some examples that express your ability to be a good team player and situations where you took initiative.

5. Ask Questions

Before the interview is over, the interviewer will most likely ask if you have any questions. Use this chance to:

  • Gain a better picture of the role to ensure you would enjoy and feel confident in the position
  • Find out more about certain aspects of the business, like company culture
  • Inquire about the next step in the selection process
  • Ask about anything else that matters to you but you were unable to find out through your research.

Many accounting schools in Austin Texas offer graduates with job support, first in networking with potential employers and then with interview skills to secure a job. When seeking the right course for you, look out for accounting schools in Austin Texas that offer these additional services.
