Analysis: Pharmacy Technician Salary in San Antonio TX

As a pharmacy technician in San Antonio, you will work with thousands of patients, providing an essential service in a retail or hospital pharmacy. Under the supervision of a pharmacist, you will review prescriptions, compound and mix medications, organize inventory, and interact with customers. If you work in a hospital, you may also make rounds, distributing medication to patients. To acquire all the skills you need for the position, you need to take a pharmacy technician course at an accredited school. You will learn all about pharmacy operations and procedures, pharmacology, and FDA drugs safety. You will also receive training in basic compounding, prescription processing, keyboarding, and computer applications. If this sounds appealing, it only gets better when you learn how much a pharmacy technician can expect to earn.

Pharmacy Technician Salary

Median annual wage in 2012 was $29,320, reports the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This means that half of all pharmacy technicians earned more than this amount and half earned less. The top 10 percent earned more than $42,400, whereas the bottom 10 percent earned less than $20,580. Median pay per hour was $14.10. Just over half of all pharmacy technicians worked in retail pharmacies and drug stores. However, you may be able to receive a higher pay if you work in ambulatory health care services or in a hospital, where median pay is between $33,550 and $35,470.

Employment Expectations for Pharmacy Technicians

More good news for pharmacy technicians is that employment opportunities are growing — and at a faster rate than for all occupations. Jobs are expected to increase by 20 percent between 2012 and 2022, a total of 707,700 new positions. This is due in part to the aging population requiring more prescription medication and in part to the increased number of individuals with insurance. Pharmacy techs will also be required to take on more responsibilities as pharmacists handle other activities, like administering flu shots.

Pharmacy Technician Salary in San Antonio TX

Pharmacy technician salary in San Antonio TX is higher than the national average — at $15.61 per hour. Pharmacy techs can expect to earn around $32,880 per year, according to the annual mean wage from the BLS, and there are around 2,650 jobs across the San Antonio-New Braunfels area.   To earn at the higher end of the median salary, you need to be qualified and experienced. Taking a pharmacy technician program, like the one at SCI, will provide you with classroom instruction, hands-on experience, externships, and preparation for the Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCE), which you must hold to work in Texas.
