Texas: Tech University Disadvantages and Gripes

If you’re looking to continue your education in Texas, you may be interested in Texas Tech University or technical schools in the state. While there are certainly a number of benefits to both of these options, it is important to be aware of all the disadvantages before arriving at your final decision.

Disadvantages of Texas Tech University

Cost Tuition at Texas Tech is quite costly. For the 2013–2014 academic year, Texas residents paid $4,862 in tuition and $2,655 in fees, a total of $7,517 per year. Out-of-state students paid even more: $13,358 for tuition plus the $2,655 in fees, or a total of $16,013 per year. As all programs at the university are four years long, students pay between just over $30,000 to more than $64,000 for their education, as well as housing and living expenses. Class Sizes Class sizes at Texas Tech can be very large, with students reporting an average of about 30 to 40 students but up to 150 in a class. Housing Housing on-site is reportedly subpar, with small rooms and no privacy, unless you pay for a more expensive option. Off-campus housing is often overpriced and cheaper options low standard. Financial Aid Many students report having issues with the financial aid team, including difficulties receiving information and aid on time. There have also been complaints about the general disorganization of the department.

Gripes with Technical Schools

Quality Schools often hire instructors for their technical knowledge rather than teaching skills. This can lead to difficulty learning and boredom in class, which increases dropout rates. Cost Many programs at technical schools come with surprise expenses. For instance, you may need to spend hundreds or even thousands on tools and equipment or pay fees for required participation in workshops. Difficulty Finding Job After Graduation Some schools offer training for careers where workers are in little demand or pay low wages. Students of these courses struggle to find sufficient work in their field after graduation.

How Southern Careers Institute Is Different

Southern Careers Institute stands out from the crowd by lacking all of these problems.

  • Programs are affordable, with tuition fees covering all supplies needed to complete a course. (The exception is our welding course, where students need to purchase a tool kit at $250.)
  • We offer a variety of financial aid options to ensure that anyone can attend our school, and our financial aid officers are dedicated to helping students receive the funds they need.
  • Class sizes are limited — laboratory classes have a student to teacher ratio of no greater than 20:1 and lecture classes of no greater than 40:1.
  • All our programs lead to careers where there are numerous jobs with high salaries in Texas.

“When my youngest child graduated from high school, I told my husband that it was my time. I went back to school to change careers after spending 37 years in the business field. At SCI, the instructors are professional, and they care about what they are teaching you, as well as expect you to give 100% in return. I had problems understanding how to draw in syringes and give injections. I requested extra help from a knowledgeable instructor, and I was able to receive one-on-one training. Today, I draw injections for approximately 100 patients each week. I am very confident in what I’ve learned. SCI has given me the chance to do what I always wanted to do. Thank you for my education. I am doing wonderful.”
