How Long is Pharmacy Tech School

When deciding whether pharmacy tech school will be a good investment, many students only look at the financial cost of attending. Though tuition is important, it’s equally crucial to consider time. Every day you spend in school is a day you could have spent working and earning money. You should thus factor how long is pharmacy tech school into your calculations, choosing a program that is both affordable and quick. Major pharmacy tech schools in Texas include:

Kaplan College

Kaplan’s Fort Worth and San Antonio campuses offer pharmacy tech programs. The course is designed to take 36 weeks, and 84% of students finish within that time.

Virginia College

Don’t be thrown by the name: Virginia College operates outside of Virginia, with 25 campuses throughout the United States, including 2 in Texas. Virginia College offers pharmacy tech training at its Austin and Lubbock locations. The program is designed to take 55 weeks, which includes an 11-week externship to provide students with hands-on experience. 71% of students finish their education within this time.

Everest College

When figuring out how long is pharmacy tech school at Everest College, it’s important to distinguish between the official length of the program. In theory, the course lasts only 33 weeks, making this one of the quickest pharmacy tech programs in Texas. In practice, however, only 32% of students finish with that time.

Allied Schools

Because Allied Schools operates over the Internet, it is difficult to say how long is pharmacy tech school at this college. The total length of the program is 120 hours, or 150 hours if the student also includes pharmacology in his or her studies. Students are allowed to complete these hours at their own pace, making it difficult to definitively estimate the length of the program.

The Fortis Institute

Fortis has campuses in both Grand Prarie and Houston, as well as the option of training online. The Institute’s pharmacy tech program lasts 30 weeks, one of the shortest among pharmacy tech schools in Texas. 64% of students are able to graduate within this time.

The Milan Institute of Cosmetology

As its name implies, the Milan Institute is mainly focused on teaching cosmetology, but the school does cover other subjects. Its pharmacy technician program, available at the campus in Amarillo, is designed to fully train students within only 34 weeks. Because the school’s student body is so small, however, it does not publish information on how many of those students completed the program on time.

Ashworth College

Like the Allied Schools, Ashworth operates over the Internet, allowing students to set their own pace and thus making it hard to estimate course completion times. The course is designed to take as little as 4 months, though it is unclear whether most students complete it that quickly. Ashworth students are also able to do a 120-hour externship.

The Southern Careers Institute

The Southern Careers Institute’s pharmacy technician program is designed to take between 9 and 12 months, depending on whether the student takes day or night classes and other factors. 80% of daytime pharmacy tech students, and 67% of students taking night classes graduate on time. Graduates of the institute have a high job placement rate; 83% are able to find pharmacy jobs shortly after graduation. Time is an important factor, but don’t choose your school solely based on the financial and temporal cost. A school may be quick and cheap, but it’s still a bad investment if you can’t quickly get a good job after graduation.
