Certified Nursing Assistant Training: Why There Might Be Better Options

Enrolling in certified nursing assistant training can be one of the most rewarding and fulfilling decisions you’ll ever make. It could also be one of the most regrettable decisions you could make. It all depends on you as an individual, your values, and what you want from a career. For some, the hard work and dedication that goes into working as a certified nursing assistant is all the thanks and reward they need. For others, the stress, long hours, and endless tasks are nothing more than torture. Read on to find out if you’ll love or hate certified nursing assistant training. We’ll also provide you with some career alternatives if you decide that nursing assisting is not for you.

The Work of a Nursing Assistant

It must be said that there is no right or wrong choice if you decide to enroll in certified nursing assistant training or if you decide to never look into nursing assistance ever again. The only wrong choice you could make is to decide to do something you really don’t want to do. With that in mind, let’s look at what will be expected from you during your certified nursing assistant training and your nursing assistant career. CNA training usually takes 2 to 6 months of training, and more often than not requires a portion of ‘hands-on’ training to be completed in a medical setting. Some programs also allow you to complete your training on a part-time schedule. To become certified, you’ll have to take (and pass) both a written exam and a skills test. Upon completion of your certified nursing assistant training you’ll be prepared to assist nurses with their daily routines and patient care. You’ll also be responsible for assisting patients with everyday tasks like hygiene, eating, and dressing. CNAs are also responsible for prepping patients for surgery, responding to patient requests, and preparing rooms for new patients.

Alternatives to Nursing Assistance

If the training and work outlined above does not appeal to you, don’t worry – there are many more options available to you. If you’re ideal career is still within the medical field but not as a CNA, you can always look into becoming a medical office assistant. As an medical office assistant you can still help patients, but without the intimacy of work involved with CNA patient care. You’ll be responsible for the daily operations of medical offices by making sure that medical files and patient records are organized and managed. The work is less stressful and you have the opportunity for career advancement. Pharmacy technician training is also a great choice for anyone with an interest in the effective running of a pharmacy, including medical records, drug dispensary and management, and computer applications. Your career starts with the decision to enroll in a certified training program and your happiness depends on you choosing the right one for you. Make sure you do your research and find out what you really want from your career and then decide to become certified. If you’re considering certified nursing assistant training, you’ve probably come across articles telling you how it can be a rewarding and fulfilling career. You’ve also probably seen articles and blog posts warning you to stay well away from certified nursing assistant training. Each and every argument on the matter is relevant as every individual is unique – everyone wants and needs something different from their career.
