Resume Writing Tips for Graduates of Accounting Courses

Once you have finished a program to become a business accounting specialist, the next step is to find a job. Even with the qualifications and skills you have acquired during your course, it is difficult to become accepted for an interview unless you have a well-written resume that explains why employers should hire you over other candidates. Here are a few tips to ensure your resume sets you out from the crowd and helps you find a job soon after graduation.

1. Start Looking for Jobs
You should begin your job search before you have even created a draft resume. This will enable you to find out exactly what employers are looking for and allow you to better highlight your experience, expertise, and qualifications.

2. Talk About Your Skills
Most likely, you will have very little experience in accounting after just graduating. If you have held full- or part-time jobs in the past, you should definitely mention them on your resume, but your focus should be on the skills you gained during your accounting course, including technical skills — such as the ability to use software like Excel, PowerPoint, and QuickBooks. As all of this is the most important information, keep it to the beginning of your resume, preferably on the first half of the first page.

3. Use Keywords
Recruiters often search for the right hire by using keywords that lead them to candidates with relevant experience. Make sure you include all the terms you can think of that relate to the positions for which you are applying. These could include:

  • Payroll
  • Financial analysis
  • Payables and receivables
  • Taxes
  • Customer service
  • Business processes
  • Inventory
  • Accounting principles

  4. Demonstrate Your Leadership Abilities
If you are or were a captain, officer, or editor in chief of a club, organization, or sports team — even back in high school — be sure to mention it on your resume. This will demonstrate your leadership qualities, as well as your ability to work in a team. Be sure to also note if you received any recognition, honors, or awards for your role.

5. Mention Hobbies and Volunteer Work
Employers can gain a better picture of your personality if you talk about a few of your hobbies, particularly interests relevant to accounting. Plus, if you volunteer for a good cause or partake in any other charitable activities, you may stand out as a better choice than other candidates.

6. Think About Format
Ensure that your resume is easy to read by using plenty of whitespace, choosing an appropriate font, and writing in bullet points rather than long paragraphs. Remember that the look and feel of your resume is a reflection of your skills using Word software.   Many accounting courses at Texas trade schools provide students with resume writing training. When deciding what program to take, look out for accounting courses that will offer you help creating your resume after you graduate.

“When my youngest child graduated from high school, I told my husband that it was my time. I went back to school to change careers after spending 37 years in the business field. At SCI, the instructors are professional, and they care about what they are teaching you, as well as expect you to give 100% in return. I had problems understanding how to draw in syringes and give injections. I requested extra help from a knowledgeable instructor, and I was able to receive one-on-one training. Today, I draw injections for approximately 100 patients each week. I am very confident in what I’ve learned. SCI has given me the chance to do what I always wanted to do. Thank you for my education. I am doing wonderful.”
