Get the Certifications That Matter

To work as a professional accountant, companies expect you to hold a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license. To receive the license, you first need to attend college for at least four years to gain your bachelor’s degree; however, many students spend an extra year acquiring their master’s degree to increase their college credit hours.

Next, you will need to find a job to meet the Texas work experience requirements. Finally, you must pass a 14-hour examination, scoring at least 85 percent. The exam comes in four sections, and you must complete all of them within 18 months. Compare all this to becoming an accounting specialist: after just 40 hours training, you will be eligible for the following certifications, all of which will set you on the right path to finding your dream job.

Certified Professional Bookkeepers Certification

The Certified Professional Bookkeepers (CPB) certification is essential for anyone who wants to work as a bookkeeper in Texas. It shows that you possess skills that go far beyond data input and that clients can trust you with their most intimate business data. To pass the CPB examination, you must demonstrate your knowledge of all the key elements of bookkeeping, including accounts payable and receivable, payroll, sales taxes, and inventory.

Inuit QuickBooks

The ability to use QuickBooks is extremely useful for accounting specialists. The Inuit QuickBooks certification demonstrates that:

  • You know how to set up files.
  • You are able to manage lists.
  • You understand the different types of items.
  • You can use various payroll services.
  • You have a good understanding of sales and purchases functions.
  • You can use customization features and shortcuts.
  • You have a basic knowledge of accounting.
  • You are able to use reports and explain their functions.

Certiport Microsoft Office Specialist

Practically all business accounting specialist positions require candidates to use Microsoft Office software. One of the best ways to prove to employers that you are prepared for such work is with a Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification. An accounting specialist course may offer training for the following.

Word

The MOS Word certification shows that you are able to perform all the main tasks in Word software, including the managing of documents, formatting text, and objects, creating tables and lists, and adding references.

Excel

An Excel certification demonstrates your ability to manage worksheets and workbooks, create cells, ranges, charts, and objects, insert tables and apply formulas and functions.

Outlook

Knowing how to use Outlook is highly beneficial to any accounting specialist. By gaining a certification, you prove that you are able to perform all basic tasks in the program, including customizing the interface, inserting graphic elements, using email features, managing multiple calendars, creating contact records, and setting up contact groups.

PowerPoint

Skills in PowerPoint can lead to a position of greater responsibility. A certification will show that you are able to create presentations consisting of content on slides and including transitions and animations to improve aesthetics.   Instead of spending four years or more in college just to gain your accounting degree, enroll in an accounting specialist program and start working in a top company after just a few months. When deciding what accounting school is right for you, look for courses that lead to all of the above certifications.
