Ways to Cut Costs

Here are a few examples of financial aid that may allow you to reduce your tuition costs.

Federal Pell Grant

The amount students are able to receive from the Federal Pell Grant changes every year. This year, the maximum is

Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

By demonstrating financial need, you can gain between $100 and $300* to pay for your tuition with an FSEOG.

Sponsor’s Grant

If you receive a grant from another organization, we will match the sponsor’s contribution with an additional grant.

Southern Careers Institute Military Grant

We offer members of the military and their spouses and dependents grants of up to $2,000.

Debt Forgiveness Grant

If you withdrew from class in the last 365 days and you meet Standard Academic Progress requirements, we will forgive balances of up to $3,000*.

There is no limit for how much financial aid you may receive through scholarships outside of SCI. By applying for as many as possible that are applicable to you, you can potentially cover all your education expenses. At SCI, we offer a High School  Scholarship and a High School Best Scholarship.

Veterans’ Benefits

Under the GI Bill, as a veteran, spouse, or dependent, you can receive funds to use toward your education. With the Post 9/11 Bill, the amount you receive will depend on the months you served in active duty and the number of credits you are pursuing. Your benefits may be able to pay for your entire tuition costs. With the Montgomery GI Bill, benefits depend on several factors, including credit load. Full-time students can receive up to $1,717 and half-time students up to $858.50.

Federal Direct Loan

You can receive between $5,500 and $9,500* in Direct Subsidized Loans and Direct Unsubsidized Loans. Unlike the above, you will need to pay back the full amount at a low interest rate.

To gain a better picture of how much you can expect to pay in tuition fees, fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and talk to one of our financial aid officers. We will analyze your individual situation to determine what type of aid you qualify for and to help you find scholarships from external organizations to cover some of the remaining costs.
