Community Colleges in San Antonio: General or Trades

Community colleges are an obvious consideration if you’re looking to attend school on a budget. While they are not for everyone, such colleges are a useful first step if you plan to enroll in a four-year university. Community colleges in San Antonio are organized under the Alamo Colleges system, which includes:

San Antonio College
San Antonio College has served the city since 1925. It provides quality education to more than 22,000 students per year. Graduates have gone on to become politicians, ambassadors, astronauts, musicians, and other important figures. San Antonio College offers one of the most extensive course selections among community colleges in San Antonio.

Its Associate’s degrees include Business Administration, English, International Studies, Speech, Architecture, and Computer Support. It also offers dozens of certificate and vocational programs, including training in Court Reporting, Early Childhood Studies, Cyber Security, and Business Management.

St. Philip’s College
Founded in 1898, St. Philip’s College was the first community college in San Antonio. It is also the only college that the Federal government recognizes for having historically focused on the Latino and African American communities.

St. Philip’s College offers the most extensive technical program among the community colleges in San Antonio. Students can train in Aircraft Technology, Advanced Manufacturing Technology, Air Conditioning and Heating, Automotive Performance, Baking, Biomedical Engineering, Business Communications, Culinary Arts, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, and dozens of other fields. They also have the option of earning Associate’s degrees in 17 different academic fields.

Palo Alto College
Founded in 1983, Palo Alto College is a more recent addition to the Alamo club. The school is committed to providing the highest-quality education possible to students from diverse backgrounds and social classes. It offers a wide range of Associate’s programs, including training in Administrative Assistance, Computer Programming, Cosmetology, Piloting, Air Traffic Control, Dance, Drama, Journalism, Political Science, Spanish, Economics, and English.

It also has an extensive certificate program in a cornucopia of subjects, including International Logistics Management, Landscape and Horticultural Sciences, Publishing, Multi-Engine Piloting, Aesthetics, Floral Design, Energy Tech, Warehouse Management, Veterinary Assistance, and Organic Farming.

Northwest Vista College

The school has 35 Associate’s programs, including training in Music Technology, Psychology, Sociology, Mathematics, Pre-Nursing, Water Treatment, Nanotechnology, Personal Fitness Instruction, and Mexican-American Studies.

For students looking to quickly enter a career or improve their current skills, the school offers a number of certificate programs, including certificates in Game Concept Art, Software Development, 3-D Animation, and Community Health. Northwest Vista College recognizes its most innovative students with Marketable Skills Achievement Awards, which are available in 10 subjects.

Northeast Lakeview College
Founded in 2007, Northeast Lakeview College has not yet received accreditation, but thousands of students have nonetheless found it worth their while to enroll and take classes. The school is well on its way to receiving full accreditation, which will give it the same academic prowess as all of the other Alamo Colleges. At that point, administrators estimate that it will host more than 16,000 students.

Northeast Lakeview College plans to offer 9 Associate’s of Arts programs, 4 Associate’s of Science ones, and 4 other fields of study. While you’ll have no trouble finding quality community colleges in San Antonio, attending one may not be the right choice for your career. If you want to quickly train for a skilled job, a technical college may be more up your alley. To learn about technical colleges, contact the Southern Careers Institute today.
