They say not to mix business with pleasure, but education is another matter. The most effective schools are those that treat their students not as mere pupils or clients, but as part of a family, offering them endless opportunities to express themselves and have fun while getting an education. This makes studying feel less like a chore, motivating students to do the best they can. The Southern Careers Institute is committed to offering this fun, motivating experience to all who attend. As a student, you’ll be able to participate in a wide range of SCI school functions, including:

Halloween Costume Parties
No holiday offers more opportunities for free expression than Halloween, which is why this holiday is an integral part of the SCI school tradition. Students have the opportunity to attend classes in their favorite costumes, competing to see whose outfit is the coolest, scariest, or most innovative. Past students have dressed up as superheroes, witches, hippies, ninja turtles, and a other interesting characters. Besides dressing up, we also offer numerous Halloween-themed activities, including a pumpkin carving contest in which the scariest looking jack-o-lantern wins.

The Official SCI Cook Off
Nothing brings a community together better than a good meal, which is why the tastiest SCI school event is open to students and community members alike. Held on our Austin campus at the beginning of each school year, this event features drinks, food, and a cooking competition. Contestants join teams, each of which works together to grill the best barbecue possible; the winning teams have access to a wide range of prizes, which vary each year. Because it unites students and community members, the Cook-Off is also a great chance for networking, giving many students a chance to meet their future employers or business partners.

SCI Student Appreciation Day
Although the Southern Careers Institute appreciates its students every day, we devote one day each year to make our appreciation particularly clear. The event gives students a chance to relax, socialize, and enjoy each other’s company. Because our students’ success would not be possible without the love and support of their families, the event also doubles as a Family Day, and students are welcome to bring as many family members as they like. The event features food, drinks, and a wide range of opportunities to win prizes in various contests. It is sponsored by Austin’s most prominent businesses and clubs.

Thanksgiving Celebration
The Southern Careers Institute never passes up a chance to give thanks. Every November, our students and faculty come together to celebrate, express their gratitude for each other, and look forward to the many new opportunities and experiences they will have in the coming year.

Christmas Ugly Sweater Contest
Whether as a family heirloom, a gift from a well-meaning relative, or a poor shopping choice, everyone has an ugly sweater hiding somewhere in their closet. Every Christmas, the Southern Careers Institute offers its students a chance to take that sweater out of storage and show it off! Students with the most elaborately ugly sweaters win a prize.   Veteran’s Day Commemoration A large portion of our students have always been veterans, and the Southern Careers Institute is proud to serve the military. Every Veteran’s Day, we come together as a school to thank our vets for their service, whether past, present, or future.   SCI  school events aren’t the only means by which we help our students feel at home. Whether through scholarships, networking, or resume building, we do everything in our power to make our students comfortable and prepared for future careers.
